The Nike D/MS/X: are you ready to step into an alternative universe?

Did you know that Nike's founder, Phil Knight, originally wanted to call his fledgling sportswear company by the futuristic-sounding name “Dimension Six?" This is just one of the fun little facts that emerged in Knight's memoir, Shoe Dog, which inspired Nike to revisit its first runner, the Cortez, with a series of OG releases dubbed the “Shoe Dog Pack." These consist of several design options originally shortlisted for the Cortez, including a falcon, a different take on the Nike swoosh, and yes, the Nike Dimension Six, with its unique, rarely seen logo.

A Shoe to Collect

First released in 1972, the original Cortez was a solid track performer in its day, but the Nike DMSX is unlikely to be tested in the sporting arena. Instead, it's aimed squarely at fans of retros and special editions. The design is old school through and through, with a stitched leather upper and a chunky, rounded toe box. That logo, a red circle with a blue stripe, is plastered boldly across the outside lateral, and there's plenty of other branding too. The instep gets a subtle, embossed swoosh, while a small Nike logo adds a splash of colour to the tongue.

What's New with the Dimension 6?

This remodel of the Cortez adds a herringbone tread for extra traction, just in case you do want to hit the trail. The foam tongue offers a subtle change of texture and an element of modern comfort. There's structural stitching around the heel, toe box and instep to keep your foot fully supported, plus a thick heel tab to help with stepping in and out.

Back to the '70s

The Nike D/MS/X is definitely for those who appreciate an old school look. You could wear it with a vintage Nike polo and track bottoms, or a classic windbreaker, light sweater and chino combo. Either way, the key is to keep it simple and clean, because ultimately, you still want your outfit to feel fresh and current.
